East Timor has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of former president Francisco Guterres, one of the defining political figures of the country's independence era.
Guterres, widely known by his resistance name Lu Olo, died on 21 June at Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He was 71.
A life that mirrored a nation's struggle
His life traced East Timor's path from occupation to independence and democratic statehood. During Indonesia's occupation from 1975 to 1999, Guterres served as a guerrilla commander and rose to become a senior figure in Fretilin, the independence movement that later became one of the country's main political parties.
After the 1999 UN-backed referendum that set East Timor on course for independence, he helped steer the political transition. He led the drafting of the constitution and became the first speaker of the National Parliament after independence in 2002.
From resistance to the presidency
Guterres was elected president in 2017 and served until 2022, when he lost his re-election bid to Jose Ramos-Horta. His career remained closely tied to the generation of leaders who moved from armed resistance into democratic institutions, helping to embed civilian governance in one of Asia's youngest nations.
Tributes have focused on his commitment to freedom, democracy and national unity. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Fretilin were among those offering condolences.
For East Timor, his death is not only the loss of a former head of state but the passing of a leader whose personal story was woven into the country's journey from occupation to independence. Funeral arrangements were pending, according to the Associated Press. Guterres is survived by his wife, Cidalia Lopes Nobre Mouzinho Guterres, and their children.
