UK Space Agency commits £13m to 16 satellite projects, from ScotRail broadband to farm sensors
The UK Space Agency has put £13m into sixteen satellite communications projects, and the list is notably weighted towards things people will actually use.

The UK Space Agency has committed £13m to sixteen satellite communications projects, announced on 19 August and routed through the European Space Agency's Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems programme, known as ARTES.
Space Minister Liz Lloyd said the investment "shows the true breadth of UK space innovation and how innovations in the UK's satellite sector can improve lives". The spread of the awards supports that framing more than most space funding announcements do: the money is going to connectivity problems on the ground rather than to hardware for its own sake.

Trains, farms and the connectivity gap
The most legible project is SODOR, run by CGI IT UK Ltd of Leatherhead, which receives £428,000 to trial satellite broadband on ScotRail's West Highland Line. That route runs through some of the least connected terrain in mainland Britain, where laying fibre or building masts along the track is difficult to justify commercially.
A second award of £199,000 goes to Farmer Charlie in London for GAUFF, a project developing affordable satellite-enabled sensors that give farmers real-time field data to optimise harvests and cut waste. The company expects the technology to be available by the end of summer 2027. Both projects target the same underlying problem: places where terrestrial networks are uneconomic but the data would be genuinely useful.
Where the larger sums went
The bigger individual awards sit further upstream. Exobotics Ltd takes £2.1m, Archangel Lightworks £1.845m, Orbital Astronautics £1.71m and Airbus Defence and Space UK £1.5m. Other recipients include BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, Aalyria Technologies, Lumino Technologies, ETL Systems, Nammo UK, Lacuna Space and Woodrow Scientific.
That mix is worth noting. It puts established primes alongside small firms working on optical links, ground segment equipment and propulsion, which is the shape of a supply chain being funded rather than a single flagship programme.
What ARTES actually does
ARTES is the European Space Agency's long-running telecommunications programme, and it works on co-funding: national agencies put money in, industry contributes its own, and companies keep the resulting intellectual property. It is deliberately closer to product development than to pure research.
For the UK that structure matters. It means a British company can develop a satellite communications product with public support and commercialise it directly, rather than delivering a capability into a government programme and stopping there. The trade-off is that ARTES money tends to produce incremental, useful technology rather than headline breakthroughs.
The case, and the caveat
The strongest argument for this kind of spending is that satellite connectivity now competes on cost with terrestrial infrastructure in exactly the places terrestrial infrastructure never reaches. A rail line through the Highlands, a hill farm, a remote monitoring site: these are the cases where a satellite link is not a fallback but the only sensible answer.
The caveat is that £13m spread over sixteen projects averages just over £800,000 each, and the two most publicly appealing awards are well under half a million. These are feasibility and trial-stage sums. Whether the ScotRail trial becomes a deployed service, or the farm sensors reach the price point farmers will pay, depends on commercial decisions that this funding does not make.
What happens next
The immediate milestone is the West Highland Line trial, which will produce something measurable: either satellite broadband holds up across the route at a cost that makes sense, or it does not. Farmer Charlie's timeline points at a product by the end of summer 2027.
The larger awards will take longer to show anything public. For now the announcement is best read as a statement about where the UK thinks its satellite sector can compete — not in launch, and not in constellations, but in the equipment and services that make somebody else's constellation useful.
