The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has passed 1,000 confirmed cases, deepening concern over a health emergency unfolding in conflict-affected areas. The country's Ministry of Health said confirmed cases had reached 1,003, including 254 deaths.
The outbreak is concentrated in Ituri province and was declared on 15 May. At least 100 people have recovered, while hundreds of patients remain in hospital or isolation.
It is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment. Officials have warned that the true number of cases may be higher, as contact tracing remains incomplete and only partial coverage has been achieved.
Pressure on displacement camps
Conditions in displaced-person camps are a particular concern. At the Kigonze camp in Bunia, officials reported 10 unusual deaths in a single week, though no Ebola case had been confirmed there at the time. The camp houses more than 20,000 displaced people, and overcrowding could make containment far harder should the virus reach such sites.
The response is further complicated by insecurity in eastern Congo, where armed conflict can restrict access for health workers and make the tracking of movements more difficult.
The road ahead
The rising case count is a warning that the outbreak may not yet have peaked. Public health teams now face the urgent task of widening tracing, protecting frontline workers and keeping the virus out of crowded displacement sites.
With no specific treatment available, containment depends heavily on early identification, isolation and the careful management of contacts in difficult conditions.
