Google has fired its biggest shot yet in the AI phone war. Tensor G6: the engine underneath

Making that possible is the new Tensor G6 chip, which Google says runs on-device AI tasks up to 3.5 times faster than its predecessor while using up to 3.5 times less energy. Cameras built for the zoom wars

The Pro models pair a 50MP main sensor with an upgraded 48MP telephoto whose larger sensor captures 30% more light, feeding a new 120x Pro Zoom mode. A ring of ambient LEDs called HiLight now circles the flash in the edge-to-edge camera bar — equal parts notification light and design signature.

Base storage doubles to 256GB across the range, a quiet spec bump that matters more than any single camera number for a phone meant to be kept for years of AI-generated media.

The UK offer

British buyers get the Pro XL from £1,279 — up from £1,199 for last year's equivalent — with the standard Pixel 11 and 11 Pro slotting beneath it. Google is sweetening UK pre-orders with enhanced trade-in values, three months of YouTube Premium and up to £80 off a Pixel Watch 5 bought alongside.

Pro buyers also receive six months of Google AI Pro, bundling the premium Gemini tier, 5TB of cloud storage and Google Health Premium — a subscription push that shows where the phone's long-term business model points.

The Apple problem

The launch lands squarely in the narrative battle with Apple, whose own AI reboot has moved more cautiously. By shipping an assistant that can operate any app, Google is making a claim about usefulness that spec sheets cannot settle — and daring reviewers to test it in the real world.
