Dominican Republic resort fire kills one and forces nearly 1,700 from Bayahibe hotel

A large fire at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe has left one Italian tourist dead and forced nearly 1,700 people to leave the property, according to reports from the Associated Press and Reuters-based coverage. The blaze broke out on Friday 19 June 2026 at the beachfront complex on the Dominican Republic's south-eastern coast, an area popular with visitors from the United States, Europe and beyond.

Authorities said guests were moved to nearby hotels and housing facilities while emergency crews brought the fire under control.

Wind and thatched roofing blamed for rapid spread

The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Centre said early observations suggested that strong winds and thatched roofing helped the flames spread quickly through the complex.

Reuters-derived reports named the victim as 46-year-old Italian national Francesca Valentino. Three people were taken to medical facilities, while six others were treated at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Neighbouring resort unaffected

Officials said the neighbouring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace was not damaged and was operating normally, limiting the disruption to a single property within the wider resort area.

Even so, the evacuation of so many guests in a short space of time placed considerable strain on local accommodation and emergency services.

Questions over resort fire safety

The incident has raised urgent questions about fire safety standards at large beach resorts, the adequacy of evacuation planning and the support available to travellers who lost documents or belongings during the emergency.
