Cost of living

The cost-of-living squeeze is tracked here bill by bill. Recent coverage includes energy prices jumping 13% in July as the cap climbed back above £1,860, food inflation finally easing to 2.2%, and headline inflation holding at 2.8% as cheaper groceries offset soaring transport costs. There is relief as well as pressure in the mix: regulated rail fares frozen for the first time in 30 years, Aldi named the UK's cheapest supermarket for a fifth month running, and analysis of where rents are genuinely rising and falling, alongside the oil shock feeding through to petrol and heating.
